Normally, your body expels the fetus (or zygote, or cell, whichever you prefer) along with blood and tissue. Depending on how far along you are, you may not even know you've had a miscarriage or be able to visually identify the ovum.

Events in a miscarriage are much like when you get your menstrual period. The lining of the uterus sheds, and along with it goes the unfertilized egg. If you are pregnant, the ovum has implanted, so when the lining sheds, it takes the ovum along with it.

When a miscarriage occurs, the baby/fetus has stopped growing for some, most times unknown, reason. When this happens, depending on the stage of pregnancy, bleeding will occur, and the baby will pass vaginally. Again, depending on the stage, an actual delivery may be necessary.

During a miscarriage the ovum either fails to attach it's self properly to the wall of your uterus, or is damaged in some way, mostly chromosomal, and dies.
