Excess baking powder in a recipe will make it bitter. An alternative to throwing everything away, is to increase the other ingredients to match the amount of baking powder that you added - of course, you will end up with too much food - but thats probably better than discarding everything.

First off, the cake or whatever you are putting it in will rise like crazy. Secondly it will taste nasty. If it happens I recommend starting over, or doubling your recipe to make up for the excess that is now in the mix.

Thank you, that is exactly how my cookies taste. My friend sent me a cookie recipe and instead of writing 2 teaspoons she wrote 2 tablespoons. The cookies are bitter and horrible. Can they be harmful if ingested?  add a comment

Though baking powder has a neutral pH7 value, it made the food product tastes bitter after the baking process when you used too much baking powder. This is mainly because of other ingredients used. For example, flour has ph value of 5.5-6.5 .

If you use too much baking powder your food will be bitter and salty. It will also turn very hard if it is any kind of bread or cookies. Never use too much it is better to put too little then too much baking powder. It is a good way to ruin the cookies.

Usually if you add to much your product, for example a cupcake, if you add to much the result will be a dense flat nasty tasting cupcake. I suggest you follow the recipe
