Baking soda will raise the pH, carbonate hardness, and general hardness of the water. Bettas like softer acidic water and if the baking soda doesn't out right kill the fish, it will severely stress the fish out.

Baking soda is very alkaline. Whether your beta fish is in a large fish tank or small bowl, any sudden change in ph can shock the fish and prove deadly.

If baking soda gets in the water with your fish, take your fish out right away! Then, clean out the fishbowl, and replace with clean, untainted water. Baking soda is fatal to fish. It increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the fish will lose consciousness and die.
