Consitutionally, he was not part of the government so nothing happens. Practically, his political party has two options: To let his vice-presidential candidate take over the presidential nomination and select a new vice-president or nominate a new Presidential candidate. How these decisions are made would be governed by federal and state election laws and the rules of specific political party.

The party in question would have to nominate another candidate, if the time of the election is close, then the head committee of the party unilaterally appoints a new candidate.
