Answer by  MathTeacher (299)

As early as grade 4, students learn about input-output tables using one operation. They learn to not only follow the rule when given an empty table, but also to determine the rule when given a filled table. This skill leads to understanding of evaluating algebraic expressions and the basic concepts of functions.

Input and output tables can be taught to students in as early as 3rd grade, but the operations involved may be limited to addition and subtraction. Once multiplication and division is taught to students, typically by 4th grade, they can use input and output tables to help determine the rule placed upon an expression with all four operations.
