Soy seems to be a big factor in this, as are feed that is "acidified" for preservation, meat and poultry "byproducts" contain organs that are high in oxalates. Don't use "prescription diet foods" and actually, any dog food that's not human food grade contains ingredients that can cause oxalate crystalization.

Foods that your dog should not be having will cause crystals. For example, table scraps are actually known to cause many problems in dogs. Very few of the problems they cause are; problems with their blood sugar levels, the formation of crystals in the urine and bladder infections. The list goes on.

A lot of brands of food can cause crystals, but low quality ones are more likely. Foods with corn in them are terrible for dogs prone to crystals.
