The first and biggest factor is whether it is genuine and not counterfeited. The second is condition--mint or circulated. Some years are more rare and valuable than others.

Gold coins are for collecting only, not spending. Their value is decreased if they are used, spent or end up in circulation. If you want your appraisal value to remain high, keep the gold pieces in a display case and not in your wallet. The older the coin the more valuable it is.
