Answer by  sonicfoundation (2597)

In mathematics n is a term used to describe the unquantified final number in a sequence (1,2,3,... ,n). Therefore, to the nth degree means continuing on until the extreme end.

"n" is a variable, meaning that it can stand in for any number. Usually "to the nth degree" is said when a textbook is outlining a TYPE of problem where you take things to any given degree. Whether the problem was taking a number to the 5th degree, the 6th, the 8th, it would all be solved the same.
