In Biblical times, children were an important source of wealth, and the source of a woman's status. Boys especially are prized. Many people believe that the Bible forbids the use of birth control, but mothers consistently nurse their children, which is a natural form of birth spacing. Having children was very important.

Genesis says that Adam and Eve were to be fruitful and multiply, but that a woman's pain would be great when bearing children (Gen. 3:16). Jesus got upset with his disciples when they told the children to leave. He said that anyone who causes a child to turn away from Jesus should die a terrible death (Mark 9:42).
