What does it mean on eBay when an item has bids but says "reserve not met?"

I've bid on a couple of things and had the highest bid, but I didn't win. It said "reserve not met."

Ebay is an online auction site and, like most auctions, you are able to set a "reserve price" which is the minimum for which you are willing to sell the goods. If this is not reached, the goods are withdrawn from sale.

If someone doesn't want to sell an item below a certain price, he can set a reserve price, so the item isn't sold until the reserve price has been reached.

A seller can specify a minimum amount that they will accept as a bid. When the reserve is not met then the amount has not yet reached that number.
