If you have a lump in your throat, it could mean many things, such as if you were in front of a class room, reading your big project and your nervous so it may be hard for you to talk because of that lump caused by nervousness.

Of course it is possible to have a real lump, but usually it means you are so overcome with emotion that it is difficult to swallow or talk.
