What does it mean if there is enough blood in your stool that it appears like you're on your period?

Any blood of questionable origin needs checked by a doctor. Usually blood on outside of stool comes from hemmoroids or piles. A black tarry stool is a sign of blood in stool. Please see your doctor as soon as possible to put your mind at ease. Chances are it's probably nothing to worry about.

It means it is time to visit a doctor. It may be a problem somewhere in your digestive tract. It may also be a problem with your diet causing feces to be too hard that when it is pushed out of your anus, it scratches it and causes it to bleed. So to be safe, visit a doctor.

Bright red blood is fresh, possibly from a hemorrhoid or tumor. Darker blood is from higher up the GI tract, possibly from an ulcer. Either way, see a doctor.

Call the doctor and see if he wants you to bring in a stool sample. You might have hemmoriads or a ulcer.
