A waxing moon is the time of the month when earth's shadow that is cast on the moon is shrinking, meaning more of the moon will be visible until the night of the full moon. A waning moon indicates a "shrinking" moon until the night of a new moon.

It is the moon at any time after the start of new moon and the before reaching the full moon. This only occurs when the left side of the moon is dark, while the right side of the moon, the part reflecting light, is growing in size day by day.
