there are two genes for each characteristic - one you get from your mother, and one you get from your father. of these, only one is expressed wholly. this gene is said to dominate the other.

If two versions (alleles) of one gene are present in a cell - one from the father and one from the mother - one is preferentially expressed over the other and dominates. Dark eye color usually dominates over light eye color, both can be present, but only one is seen.
