The inverted pyramid is a technique used by writers, especially media people, to exemplify where the most important information pertaining a particular subject goes. The technique teaches writers that the most important information that they need to convey to the reader must be atop of the pyramid.

To understand what an inverted pyramid is picture a triangle shape and turn it upside down. The pointy end of the triagle should be the bottom of the figure. The wide side of the triangle should end up on the top. An inverted pyramid stands on its tip. It resembles the shape of a the letter "v".
