Well EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. This valve opens and close as the car operates to allow exhaust gases to be re-burned in the combustion chamber. This in turn warms the engine up faster and also reduces exhaust emissions.

An EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculator) takes a portion of the unburned fuel/air mixture from the combustion chamber and mixes it back into the engine to burn again; thereby re-burning the old gases with a new cycle to make the over all output cleaner before it goes through the catalytic convertor and out of the tail pipe.

This type of valve does a few different things that you may not know of. The main thing that this valve does is control the amount of fuel that goes to the engine.
