Gram negative cells have a characteristic capsule layer made of LPS or lipolysaccharide as an outermost covering, that degrade into endotoxins. Underneath this layer is the thin peptidoglycan, which covers the bacterial cell wall. This wall covers the plasma membrane and the cytoplasm, which contains organelles and the nucleus.
