Depending on the weather patterns, they generally start their fall migration before the first frost. They may begin to come to the United States in the spring, as early as February, according to an online source. You may also ask your local game warden or wildlife specialist more about this.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds undertake a yearly migration that sees them traveling thousands of miles across the Gulf of Mexico. Between August and September the male birds will fly to the winter breeding grounds, followed shortly thereafter by juvenile and female hummingbirds. They return, the same order, at the end of May and return to the exact location each year.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are one of the two species that flies farthest during its annual migration. Ruby-throated hummingbirds can fly as far as 2000 miles. They can start from as far north as Saskatchewan, and fly all the way down to their winter homes in Florida and other warm southerly regions.

They migrate individually down to the tip of Florida. When there are enough of them, they cross the Caribbean as a group, to Mexico, where they pass the winter.

During their autumn migration to Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies, ruby-throated hummingbirds fly non-stop, relying on the fat stored in their body from a summer's worth of feeding to keep them alive. The males molt while migrating.
