When someone leaves a will, sometimes they are not specific. "Generalization" is when someone leaves a person a watch, for example, but owns 2 watches.

Generalizations are generally and completely wrong. This unfortunately means that generations are constantly passing their wrongness down to future generations. Gradually the future generations are challenging these "assumed truths", breaking way into new social norms. Thankfully, these new social norms are becoming more acceptable.

In terms of inheritance, generalization is a faster process when settling an estate. Families work out issues themselves with regard to who gets what, not lawyers.
