Atoms gain or lose electrons in order to become stable, so they no longer react with other elements. they do this by either ionic bonding or covalent bonding. ionic bonding involves giving away or taking electrons covalent bonding involves sharing them. An Atom which has lost an electron becomes positively charged, an atom gaining an electron becomes negatively charged

An atom that has gained/lost an electron is called an ION. If an atom loses an electron, it's a positively-charged ion. If it gains an electron, it's a negatively-charged ion.
