I would first ask about the length of employment , was the sitter reliable, neat, did the child connect with her. I would ask about her decision making, did she seem to make good choices with the kids when there was no guidance available. I would also ask about any problems and circumstance surrounding her leaving the previous employer.

Ask how good the person is with children and what kind of temperament that they have. Ask them how they know the person who may potentially watch your children. If they haven't known them long they probably aren't a good reference.

Were there any problems with the babysitter, were they responsible, did their children get along with them, did they get a good feeling, etc.

When calling babysitter references, ask about dependavility of the job seeker. How long the babysitter worked for the reference and what is known about the reference's social and academic life are reasonable questions. It doesn't hurt to ask what the babysitter challenges are so as to guage a total picture. This question will also show a total picture Taht's realistic.
