Stress tests determine if there is any cardiac ischemia. It also can determine what your ejection fraction is, or overall functioning of the heart. When people complain of chest pain, a lot of times your doctor will proceed with a stress test and based on those results determine if coronary angiogram is needed or not.

If the stress test is normal (or negative), you do not have significant blockage in the blood vessels of your heart that would damage your heart and cause a heart attack. Abnormal (positive) stress test usually means you have signs or symptoms of heart attack during the test (chest pain, ekg changes) and need other tests.
