What do I do if I lost my w-2 tax returns?

If you lost your W2 for 2009, you should contact your employers for copies. If you lost your prior years tax returns/w2s, contact the IRS for transcripts of your returns/W2s.

Contact the human resource department of your employer. They should be able to produce another copy and forward it to you in a short period of time.

Ask your employer for new copies. If you think this will result in a poor performance review then use last years and hope for the best.

Your first option is to contact those employers that you had W-2s for but you now do not posses. Your second option is to call the IRS and ask for transcripts. The only problem with this is the IRS does not keep track of your state records. Your third is option is to file a substitute W-2.

You can request another copy from your employer, or from the IRS. Your employer is required to send a copy to the IRS in addition to your copy.
