Torque numbers on golf club shafts indicate the amount of twist the shaft has. Higher torque numbers indicate more twist in the shaft and will tend to cause a hook.

In terms of performance, less torque means more directional consistency, most of the time. If a shaft has too much for a given player shot dispersion will be greater.
