It all depends on which ones you are refering too. Diffrent ones stand for diffrent facial expressions you would convey in a face to face conversaion. There are hundreds diffrent ones and each individual will have thier own unique versions. Some common ones are : ), : (, :P.

:) or :-) means happy. :D or :-D means very happy. :( or :-( means sad. :-/ or :/ means confused, or not really sure how to answer. :-O is the shocked face, like "Oh my God". :-P is a smiley face with the tongue sticking out, used in silly situations. ;-) is the wink face, used to be sexy.

^_^ is a smiley face that has a sense of playful happiness. xD is a very commonly used face that denotes amusement, sometimes laughter. =P is another commonly used one which is a person sticking their tongue out. It's a very playful emoticon.
