Depending on the age of the baby, what it eats varies. At between 4 to 6 months, you can start to introduce baby foods such as bananas and applesauce. You may also try baby cereals. By one year, babies should be eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and meats.

Until they reach 4-6 months of age, babies should get all of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula. After 4--but ideally 6--months, the baby can start on runny cereals and pureed fruits, vegetables, and meats. As baby grows teeth and refines motor skills, larger pieces of food can be introduced.

Strictly speaking babies do not eat. They get nourishment by drinking (suckling) milk either directly from their mother or from a bottle. Usually, soft food is not introduced until around six months, although there have been instances when parents have been to encouraged to try giving cereal at six weeks.
