The word refer to horse drawn public transportation. I was faster than walking and our current word bus comes from omnibus.

In the 1880's it referred to a bus for passengers. It was a method of public transport mainly although of course the vehicles are smaller than those of today. The name was abbreviated in the early twentieth century.
