It cast a bright light on what life was like for people who were very rich, and showed that even though they were rich, they were deeply flawed.

The American dream is to live a life of ease and comfort or of wealth; where people do not cast aspersions on the way you live, the company you keep and the food you eat. The Great Gatsby told about a man from the other side of the tracks who made good after much sacrifice.
