A swollen kidney can be the result of a renal calculus, also known as a kidney stone. These can tear through the kidney tissue, causing inflammation. Another cause of nephritis can be kidney failure, which causes toxins to build up in the renal tissue, making it swell due to the buildup of creatin and waste.

The most common causes are an obstruction in the ureter or bladder caused by a kidney stone or swelling. It is also possible the kidney itself is infected.

Swollen kidneys can be caused by several different things and may not necessarily be kidney disease. Dropsy or edema can be caused by heart failure, liver disease, gastrointestinal troubles and systemic toxicity. Also varicose veins or a clot that has formed in the calf or ankle can be the cause.
