The most common cause of an evaporator system leak on most BMW's is a bad fuel cap. Replace the fuel cap with a new cap and if the problem persists, then look at all of the hoses in the system to check for cracking. But more than likely it will be the fuel cap

If the e46 evaporator leak it is due to a small box in the inner part of the machine. It is not recommended to use any sealing agent as it will not completely cure the problem. It will only stop the problem for few days. better that you change the whole system and the associated adjuster unit.

It must be a faulty fuel cap. Replace the cap as needed from a certified mechanic. You might have to repair the whole system.

Most commonly, The reason is grounded in the history of the car's former owners. People tend to be careless these days. They don't clean the vehicle, and use cheap parts. SO if you repair this, be sure to use the original replacements only. This will count in the end, my friend.
