If when at operating temp you notice white smoke coming from exhaust you may have a bad head gasket. Check engine oil dipstick to see if oil looks milky. If so that will tell you if the head gasket is bad or worse a warrped head or cracked block.

That what happens when an engine gets to hot. Components start to malfunction and fail. Engine operate at a certain temperature level and once you go past that bad thing happen. Things like cracked head and seized bearings. You probably either cracked your block our more likely the head and coolant is now leaking into the cylinder causing power loss.

Your 88 Royale is no longer a royal in the high heats. It is a simple case of overheating. Power is normally lost in case of overheating. Factors to consider are water circulation, oil temperature and pressure, fuel and air intake. You have to have the engine check. See also if smoke is dominant.
