It is possible that the program has a bug. It can also be that your computer is hit by a virus. In the first case, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to view the Task Manager window from where you can close the problematic program. In the second case, install and update the last version of an anti-virus software on your computer.

Run taskmgr and look if the program is running twice. If it is like that, terminate one instance of it and try again. If that not helps look, if the programm is accessing any locked file with filemon.

There could be too many open processes running. You may need to close some open programs, including the one hanging, using "ctrl-alt-delete" and then try to re-run it by itself.

The computer basically does not have enough memory, so the program that you were using is crashing. Make sure your memory is maxed out on the workstation.
