Numbness of the thumb and heel of the hand may be related to carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause pain and numbness of the thumb, index and middle fingers as well as pain in the palm of the hand. Ligaments and tendons surrounding the median nerve become inflamed causing these symptoms.

Such numbness could be an indication of a neck problem, such as bone spurs pressing on a nerve or a cervical spine disk problem. It could also be a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome. If you use a computer a lot and rest the heel of your hand on the desk or wrist rest, you could be pressing nerves.
