Menstrual spotting can happen for many reasons. Hormone levels fluctuation or an egg implanting in the womb are two reasons.

Spotting is something you should take note of, especially if it is not common for you. It could mean you're pregnant, your hormones are changing, menopause is starting, etc. Pay attention to the smell and color. If it is really dark or has a bad smell, this could mean trouble and you should see your doctor.

The most common cause of menstrual spotting is pregnancy. If you have been noticing other symptoms, such as unexplained nausea, you should check with a doctor.

There are many, many different possibilities. It could be a minor infection, a hormonal imbalance, a blockage, or many other things. Only a gynecologist can tell for certain.

A lot of the time menstrual spotting is caused by a hormonal imbalance. This can be corrected by seeing a gynecologist and getting on some sort of birthcontrol with hormones to balance you out. You could be getting too much of a hormone or not enough.
