This depends on where the water is coming from. Water backing up from the toilet is generally due to a clog in the local line that can be fixed easily by a plumber. Other areas could be from water runoff or from clogged sewer lines.

There are a few things that could be causing water to back up. First and most obvious, a clogged drain especially in a basement. Other sources could be high groundwater levels, and or poor drainage outdoors. Problems like this are best diagnosed in person by a real plumber. More information is needed to properly answer.

Well, there must be some kind of leak going on somewhere. Make sure you check where the water is leading from.

One instance of water backing up into the house may be due to a backup in the sewage system. Whether its clogged, or the septic tank is full. You can always try to use a drain cleaning agent.

A common cause could be damage to the outside drainage pipes. This is often the result of tree roots growing into the pipes. A full septic tank is also a common problem.

1. A stopped up drainage pipe. 2. Tree roots in a sewer pipe or water pipe, blocking it. 3. Cracked foundation, causing a water leak.
