The most common cause for a car to overheat is a bad thermostat. It is bad if the radiator stay cool when the engine temp is high. Also the cooling fans may not be working because of a bad relay, temperature sending unit, or because the fans themselves have failed.

Low coolant level. Thermostat could be stuck. Water pump could be damaged or a belt is slipping. Radiator fan is not working properly. Those are the most common reasons.
