This may be due to an excess of sodium built up in your body. If you have high blood pressure, you are most likely retaining fluid. Another cause could be heart problems specifically on the right side, which can cause edema also. It could also be from ill fitting footwear.

On the mild side, things such as heat or too many salty snacks can cause feet swelling. Some swelling can be caused by strains or sprains. Other swelling can be caused by heart conditions such as heart failure. It is important to consult a physician if the swelling persists or you are displaying other symptoms of heart conditions.

Foot swelling can be caused by something as easy as prolonged standing, overweight, age, blood clots, medications, excessive salt intake, blood pressure problems or trauma. It can also be caused by something more serious such as kidney, liver or heart failure, hormones, blockage of lymph nodes, varicose veins or leg infections.
