The most common causes of swollen parotid glands include enlarged lymph nodes, inflammation of parotid tissue (parotitis) due to either a viral or bacterial infection (easily treated with local antibiotics), influenza and mumps. Some rare conditions include salivary stones, adverse medication reactions, tumors, Sjogren's syndrome, etc.

It is possible that the saliva gland is blocked by a calcium "pearl" which will not allow the saliva to flow, creating a back-up of saliva that will make the gland swell.

A swelling could be the cause of mumps. The salivary glands can be affected. The swelling could be malignant if you have weakness in the face. it could be sjogren syndrome, the eyes will be dry with this diagnosis.
