The camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor work together to fire the coil packs, if one of these is failing/has failed the car will backfire. The northstar V8 has a COP ignition which can be tricky to troubleshoot.
The most common reason an engine will backfire is if the spark timing is wrong. Another way an engine will backfire is if there is too little backpressure in the exhaust system which would be caused by a defective muffler or exhaust piping or a poorly sealed or cracked exhaust gasket.
