Verizon has always been Verizon. They did merge with Alltel recently, however this merger did not make them change the name. Even after the merger, they are still called Verizon.

Verizon had to built an entire SOA operational infrastructure itself. As have many other SOA implementations, Verizon's started after a merger, in this case, the GTE/Bell Atlantic merger that created Verizon. GTE or you can say Bell is the company that merged into Verizon, and it laid the bases of Verizon.
