Magenta is a fairly modern color mix of pinky-purple hue. The dye of the same name, sometimes also called fuchsine, was discovered in 1859, and named in honor of the Battle of of Magenta fought near the town of Magenta, Italy.

Magenta is a dark purplish-red (or purplish-pink depending on how you look at it). It is similar to fuschia, if you know what that is. Generally, I would consider it close to wine-ish in color.
