What causes the odor of gasoline inside a car?

The odor of gasoline is probably caused by a leaky gas tank. It could be something else, but that is the mostly likely culprit. Other possibilities include engine trouble. Its a problem that should be dealt with right away. Knowing what causes it, doesn't let you figure out how to fix it.

This could be caused by a leaky seal somewhere in the fuel filler, or when the fuel tank is accessible from panels inside the car, a leaky seal or connection.
