Your cervix softens when levels of the hormone progesterone increase in your body. This happens when you ovulate each month. Your cervix also softens as your body prepares to give birth, allowing the baby to leave the uterus.

Softening of the cervix is caused by being in labor. The cervix becomes flexible and widens so that a baby can come through the birth canal easily. When the cervix has not softened for child birth a physician is required to use medication such as hormones to aid in delivery.

Softening of the cervix is caused by chemical reactions that occur in a woman's body in the final stages of labor. Sometimes the body does not release enough of these chemicals to cause the cervix to soften and medication has to be administered to cause the softening to take place.
