Electrical power surges occur most often when a piece of equipment that draws a large amount of power turn off. It can be a pump, air conditioning unit, freezer. The unit may not even be in your home. They disrupt the steady voltage when they turn on or off.

You might want to take a look at the wiring. Sometime with age the wire get a bit sensitive and will start to cause surges and spikes in power. It is also possible if you are not the first owner, a prior owner may have miswired it somewhere.

I believe power surges are caused by a spike in the electricity, depending on how much it is being used.

A power surege is caused when the outlet is over loaded with electricity, due to a wiring problem, or possibly and electrical/lightening storm. Most major appliances, especially all electronics sound have surge protected outlet or extenuion cords, all easily found at stores which carry these electrnics. A power sure can also cause major if not permanate damage to electronics
