This nerve disorder is primarily caused by Type 2 diabetes mellitus and post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles), but can also be caused by many other things, including alcohol, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus; by cancer treatment drugs, AIDS, inherited disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth, and also from toxins such as mercury.

Peripheral neutopahty is the damage to the nerves of peripheral nervous system which is caused due to disease of nerves or from side-effects of systemic illness. The causes are such as diabetes mellitus, shingles, vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, alcohol, autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, radiation, kidney failure, syphilis, exposure to toxic substances, cancer etc.

The cause of this painful condition is unknown a lot of the times. There are situations where it can be the result of taking medicine or after undergoing chemotherapy.
