This can be through lack of calcium in the bones, sometimes brought on by the menopause, sometimes can be prevented by eating cheese and drinking full fat milk.

Generally, it's caused by low estrogen. After menopause, there is a significant drop in estrogen, speeding up bone loss. Bone is not replaced as quick as it is lost.
