An injury can damage the nail bed and cause the nail to pull away. Also, a fungus infection under the nail can result in nail loss.

Nails pulling out of the nail bed is one symptom typical of a fungal nail infection. Fungal infection will also typically cause discoloration of the nail (usually yellowing) and moderate to severe flaking of the nail. To treat a fungal infection, there are several courses of action which include oral anti-fungal tablets or topical creams.

The top three reasons that I can come up with is too much cleaning under the nails, rough removal of artificial nails, and nail polishes with hardening chemicals.
