The pressure in the middle ear is usually the same as the pressure outside. Ear popping is caused by an imbalance of pressure in the middle ear. This imbalance of pressure can occur due to nasal or sinus congestion or allergies. It can happen when you are flying, because of the high altitude.

Ears pop when the pressure around the eardrum equalizes. Unequal pressure changes the shape of the eardrum. Letting air in or out of the Eustachian tubes pops the eardrum flat.
