What causes my Dodge Colt to lurch when I am driving and then lose acceleration power?

A lurch could be involved in the transmission and shifting at the wrong time. Losing power could also be part of that or it could be involved with vacuum lines and not having enough suction. The fuel pump could also be acting up, causing a loss of power. Check spark plugs too.

Try changing the spark plugs and wires. Sometimes dirty plugs can make a vehicle hesitate and begin to lose power,to make it appear it is about to cut off.

well one of the posiblitys could be that your spark plugs could be fouled out. All you have to do take them out and see if they are carboned up.
