There are two types of infection: Bacterial and viral. Both tend to happen when parts of the human body that aren't meant to be exposed to the outside world, are. The introduction of bacteria usually follows, and these will attempt to reproduce. The immune system will attempt to fights this, which causes pain and swelling.

Germs. Bacteria, viruses. You can help prevent infection by frequent hand washing, avoiding others with known infections and practicing good overall hygeine.

When something attacks the body such as bacteria that gets in an open cut, our body mounts its defenses through red blood cells to repel that attack. Clean cuts thoroughly with warm water and soap.
